About the Cover
ABOUT THE COVER: Eutrophication of Greenwich Bay, Rhode Island, killed these juvenile menhaden in August 2003. Excess nutrients, including phosphate and
nitrogen, promote blooms of algae and blue-green bacteria, depleting oxygen to the point where fish and other marine animals suffocate. Eutrophication is becoming more widespread due to increased use of phosphate fertilizers and to inadequate wastewater treatment practices. It is estimated that about half of the lakes in Asia, Europe and North America are eutrophic (ILIC 2008). PHOTO BY THOMAS ARDITO, NARRAGANSETT BAY ESTUARY PROGRAM, WWW.NBEP.ORG
